Hotel Paradijs (2007)

Hotel Paradijs (2007) is a short film by German director Jan Krüger.

Every day Paul crosses the canal that seperates the city centre from the industrial area of Amsterdam, where his lover Christiaan waits for him impatiently. A dear routine for both - until one day Paul meets Claire who starts seducing him into her very own universe - the 'Hotel Paradijs'. She manages to make Paul the audience of her own play: a play with swapped roles which Paul seems to be ever less capable of...

"Hotel Paradijs is about desire. It's about its magic and its darkness, about the irrational. I envision a shooting on original locations in Amsterdam, where I have just spent a year studying in the Binger Filmlab. The emphasis will not be on too much of a technical effort, instead I'm always looking for the right visual feeling of a life on the border of day and night, desire, happiness and pain." -Director's note

Synopsis
PAUL is 21, a young man from Germany. He lives in a relationship with CHRISTIAAN, a photographer, about ten years older than he is. Paul enjoys his role as a sex object, and the power it gives him over the other man. He plays the game - little injuries and insults are as much part of it as precious tender moments. Although the feelings they share are never outspoken, they don’t seem to wish for anything more.

Until one day CLAIRE (25) turns up. She seduces Paul with her surprising ideas, with her mysterious energy. Paul falls for her secret - and eventually moves into her room in the ‚Hotel Paradijs’.

But Claire doesn’t settle down. She moves through Amsterdam, takes Paul on a boat trip, gets a tattoo, repeatedly disappears without a reason. Paul, who has always been adored and courted now experiences the other, darker side of an uneven relationship. Helpless, he is bound to watch as Claire gives herself away.

With the spreading of a bacterial infection, reality begins to blur. Paul decides to follow his new desires - just to find that Claire has already gone a step further...
