Everyone is Different (2012) by Sia Hermanides (Nederland)

Everyone is Different

Everyone is Different is a touching video from a Dutch website for LGBT youth, www.iedereenisanders.nl. The website helps young people find ways to talk to their parents, friends and family as well as provides some great LGBT resources, especially on finding help. It also connects LGBT youth with others like them.
This video shows some of the more painful moments of alienation that LGBT teens experience while growing up. Everyone is different. That’s difficult, easy, accustomed, awkward, cool, logical, strange, amazing, wonderful, painful, fine, crazy, great, cool, stupid, especially, pleasant, unpleasant, delicious, ridiculous, funny , lousy, awesome, intricate: just the way we are.

El mueble de las fotos/The piece of furniture (2008 ) by Giovanni Maccelli (Spain)

Plot: The piece of furniture in the living room is my family’s shop window. But the photos of the son and his husband have a place there? A gay couple came with a plan to gain a spot in the family photographs.
Cast: Fernando Núñez, Juan Beiro
Director: Giovanni Maccelli
Country: Spain
Release year: 2009
Duration: 2,5′
ENG - The Piece of Furniture in the living room serves as one family’s proud and sacred window to their menaje. It is a typical guardian of heteronormative values. Friends are ok, as long as they don’t become gay partners, because then they cease to fit in the frames.

Poster Boy (2004) , gay themed drama

With the help of a hot, slightly older new acquaintence (Noseworthy), the closeted son (Newton) of a conservative U.S. Senator (Lerner) puts a shocking spin on his dad's re-election campaign.
Most reviews for this movie are quite negative, and I guess I am in the minority when I say this - but this movie was fantastic!!! It is not your traditional gay movie, actually it doesn't really have much of a gay focus which might annoy some people. It's more a coming of age story and is relate-able to everyone, no matter what your sexual orientation is. At first the plot of this movie might seem to move along too slowly, but that is simply to establish the characters and setting of the movie which is something that has to be done to fully appreciate this movie. When you look back on the movie, you do realize how everything fits in together perfectly, now that you know everything, although it might seem a little bit muddled halfway through the movie.

Some other users have commented on the movie not being multi dimensional, but I think that the way that the characters reacted are pretty realistic, and most people (generally) are multi dimensional but may only show one side of their selves for one reason or another, and don't forget that this movie is focused from the point of view of Henry Kray. It also has many plot twists, and though it has be commented upon that it is too predictable, I thought nothing of the sort. The characters are oddly unpredictable, and are like multi layered onions, many people might just look it and observe that is it just another gay movie, but it is not, it is so much more than that.

Devin & Glenn: Overturn Prop 8 and Make Homosexuals Marry! (2011) by Saatchi & Saatchi (US)

If you disagree with the homosexual lifestyle, why not overturn Prop 8 and make them get married, like the rest of us?

Justin Long and Mike White star as Devin and Glenn, a married gay couple, in this charming new PSA calling for the repeal of Proposition 8, a controversial constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages in the state of California.
The couple go through the familiar stereotypical stages of married life, settling into bored routines and working through minor frustrations. Gay marriage isn't anything special, so why deny it?
Honestly, I can't imagine this winning over anyone who voted for Prop 8, but preaching to the choir never hurts when it's done this well. (Note: This video has a few NSFW moments.)

Noturno (2008 ) by Thiago Carlan and Martín Deus (Brazil and Argentina)

Tá/OK (2007) by Felipe Sholl (Brazil)

Two twenty-something boys in a public restroom. They sniff coke, talk about sex, get dirty. But the film takes on another tone as they reveal what it is that they really want.
Two boys in a public restroom. 2008 Teddy Award winner.
Short films don't always get the attention they deserve on some audience review sites, or from audiences in general, but often a short film can do in a matter of minutes something more entertaining and expansive than a feature film of much longer length. I feel that this film is such a work - the feelings, emotions, and desires of both of the characters are portrayed in both covert and overt ways, along with the joy, challenge and, at times, awkwardness of each young man's exploration of sex, sexuality and sexual preference. Simultaneously both frank and direct, and humorous and tender, the situation, action and interaction, plot and climax of the film are all developed in a way that was, for me, extremely entertaining and enjoyable. I look forward to further work from those involved with this film, which was screened in the 2008 Frameline LGBT Film Festival in San Francisco, as part of the "Worldy Affairs" program of short films.

Ma saison super 8 / My Super 8 Season (2005)

Release Year: 2005

French drama directed by Alessandro Avellis

Freely inspired by historical events, My Super 8 season recounts the birth of modern French gay identity.

The story of a friendship between two French activists in the early 1970s at the beginning of France’s gay rights movement. Marc is an attractive Parisian student who tries to organize other students to fight for gay rights; while his best friend, Julie, fights for working class issues before moving on to feminist and lesbian causes. In the midst of his activism, Marc battles with his policeman father and tries to build a relationship with Andre, a young factory worker who says he’s not gay, but can’t seem to keep out of trouble at various cruising spots around Paris. Meanwhile, Julie rebounds from her separation from her boyfriend, Stephane, by moving into a ‘women only’ residence and hooking up with one of the other residents.

“My Super 8 Season” is inspired by the story of the FHAR, the Homosexual Revolutionary Action Front, and dedicated to its leaders Guy Hocquenghem and Françoise d’Eaubonne (Guy Hocquenghem's book Homosexual Desire (1972) may be the first work of Queer Theory). The FHAR are known for having given radical visibility to homosexuals during the 1970s in the wake of student and proletarian uprisings of 1968, which had given little space to the liberation of women and homosexuals. Breaking with older homosexual groups which were more hidden and sometimes conservative, they asserted the subversion of the bourgeois and hetero–patriarchal state, as well as the inversion of chauvinistic and homophobic values common of the left and extreme left.

Director's statement about the film:
“My Super 8 Season” is my first feature film. It runs in Paris between May 68 and the early 70s. I have always been fascinated by that era that represents to me the birth of an international ideological movement based upon some fundamentals principles as freedom and pacifism. I have also been very influenced by the 60s and 70s cinema, for instance by directors such as Marco Ferreri, Jean-Luc Godard, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Rainer Werner Fassbinder and so on…Since 2000 I live in Paris and I was very soon involved in the story of the FHAR (Front Homosexuel d’Action Révolutionnaire) which was the heart, with the MLF (Mouvement de Libération des Femmes) of the French sexual freedom movement. I realised that no films had been made about this crucial period that saw the birth of our current rights. Although appreciated by several producers, my project did not find any financing. So, I thought that this film that talks about freedom must be created in the freest way… and I decided to self-produce it. The casting was central to this film and it went on during two months. I was lucky to find a young and astonishing team, in particular the main leads. Because of the low-budget conditions, “My Super 8 Season” was filmed in nine days and I took care myself about the 70s costumes and decors, looking for vintage dress and orange accessories in the Parisian flea markets... In spite of that, the frenetic rhythm of shooting and its atmosphere were truly exciting. As a result, the story got more developed and some scenes were added at the last minute, played in improvisation or written in the middle of the night. After “My Super 8 Season”, I decided to give a more historical point of view of my first film, with the documentary “The revolution of desire” (2006) which achieves and concludes my personal research about those thrilling years.
Interesting film, made with very little money, that attempts to chronicle the advent of gay liberation in France, after the May 1968 students' uprising and general strike.

Simon Amstell Do Nothing Live (2010)

Release Year: 2010
Simon Amstell - Do Nothing Live 2010, recorded in Dublin.

Simon Amstell is an openly gay stand-up comedian who built a reputation in the UK for a very bitchy style of comedy when he hosted "Never Mind The Buzzcocks" on BBC2. "Do Nothing" could not be more different - it is largely about how we get used to playing a certain character and whether we can find the courage to change. He draws extensively upon his own sexuality to illustrate this, and inevitably, he is the butt of all of his own jokes. It is about as close as you can get to watching a man emotionally and philosophically disemboweling himself on stage. Not only will it make you laugh - it might well make you think as well!
“Amstell in the flesh is frank, philosophical and painfully funny. Able to wrestle gut-wrenching laughs out of his own existential angst.” - Evening Standard, London
"This is cerebral comedy backed up by a newfound depth of feeling. He’s the real deal, where philosophy collides with anxiety: where Heidegger meets Woody Allen." - The Guardian, London
