The ‘Eating Out’ Series Returns With ‘Drama Camp’

Do you remember the first time you saw one of the Eating Out movies? It rewrote the rule book for gay-themed films and pushed the boundaries of what was considered the norm. The second film even showed full-frontal nudity with actor and model Marco Dapper. The third
installment introduced us to Zack and Casey (Chris Salvatore & Daniel Skelton) and their rocky, dramatic relationship. Well, the two are back to try and figure out in the fourth film in the series, Eating Out: Drama Camp.
Zack and Casey’s relationship seems to be in a slump but things are about to change as the gang heads to Dick Dickey’s Drama Camp for the summer. When Zack meets Benji (Aaron Milo) there is an instant connection. But not wanting to interfere with Zack’s current relationship, Benji pretends to be straight. When Benji and Zack get cast as lovers in an updated, sexed-up version of The Taming of the Shrew, their self-restraint is put to the test. And when the sparks start to fly, Casey’s trusted friend Penny takes matters into her own hands by setting a poison oak trap for Benji so that Casey can step in as Benji’s understudy.
But when Beau (Ronnie Kroell) starts crushing on Casey, Casey wonders if he and Zack are really meant to be together after all. Meanwhile, Jason, the straight director who likes to film gay guys to impress the straight chicks, starts falling for Lilly (Harmony Santana), the transgendered girl. As if all that’s not enough, Aunt Helen (Mink Stole) has tapped into her inner couger and takes on a new boy toy, Andy (Joel Rush).
In the trailer (that you can check out below), you’ll see that the franchise is up to their usual antics and hilarity. A little fun fact about this film is that Patrick and I both auditioned for this film and the film that will follow it, Eating Out 5. This film is set for release this July. Watch out for it.

Synopsis

Une petite ville dans l’Aveyron. Dans une usine, promise à une fermeture plus qu’imminente et qui n’est plus guère peuplée que d’une poignée d’ouvriers qui jouent aux cartes en attendant leur dernier jour, un jeune homme silencieux se présente. C’est un intérimaire qui a pour mission de démonter une machine qui peut encore servir ailleurs, là où il y a du travail. Les ouvriers, intrigués par cette présence passagère, tentent de nouer le contact.
C'est la "prolo pride" dit Guiraudie (dans un débat figurant dans les bonus du dvd). Dans cet univers métallurgique hautement viril, l'homosexualité y est un sujet tabou et toute l'adresse de Guiraudie est de lentement nous amener à comprendre les enjeux sentimentaux qui se trament entre trois hommes: le jeune Jacques, le vieux Louis et Jean, le contremaître. Tous trois vont se tourner autour, jouer de leurs regards insistants, parler à demi-mots de leurs émois inavouables dans une parade amoureuse rythmée par le démontage de l'Ubitona. Les larges tuyaux de cette machine diabolique en deviennent rapidement phalliques et seront même le prétexte pour se toucher subrepticement. Guiraudie filme la passion (non-réciproque) entre ces trois hommes mais dont on ne verra finalement que la partie immergée.

Alain Guiraudie supplies a heady mix of social realism and intensely muted sexual desire throughout That Old Dreams That Moves, a tale of queer lust set against a greasy metallic environment that brings to mind Kenneth Anger's Kustom Kar Kommandos. A man arrives at a factory in order to fix a piece of machinery ready for transport, but the function of the machine remains as mysterious as the subtext for the protagonist's withered gaze. The factory's half dozen workers wander aimlessly around, bemoaning their future unemployment until Guiraudie's mechanic falls for his boss, who is either a cock tease or too afraid of the mechanic's willing, intimidating libido.

The rare film whose every moment is subtly and brilliantly conceived, Alain Guiraudie's "That Old Dream That Moves" manages to avoid all cliches in its distinctive handling of a story about the closing of a rusty industrial factory and the allure of a young worker to a group of soon-to-be-unemployed men. Though pic's odd 51-minute running time places it in the neither-fish-nor-fowl category commercially, it only adds to the work's artistic integrity, since Guiraudie rightly determined that his fable couldn't be expressed more briefly, nor filled and plumped up to conventional feature length. Staged with a masterly eye for detail, environment and the unexpected quirks in human behavior, work reps a major breakthrough for a significant Gallic voice. Top prize-winner in Cannes' 2001 shorts fest has enjoyed enhanced prestige via subsequent forays at N.Y., Palm Springs and Rotterdam fests. Most likely Stateside market option is cable, though small screen would sap much of the film's considerable visual majesty. (more here).

Summary:
Matt Riddlehoover wrote, directed, edited and stars in his seriocomic feature about a playwright who feeds off his stubborn attraction to the wrong type of guy (played in multiple roles by Jonas Brandon).

Review:
"To a Tee" is about a gay playwright, David, who finds himself constantly attracted to the wrong kind of guys. (He can't understand what's wrong.) David manages to gain the attention of a newspaper reporter, Amada (Lindsay Hancock), and she favors his work; the two soon become thickest of friends. David feels that he is on his way to fame, but then he meets her boyfriend, Kevin, (Jonas Brandon) and things happen as we watch both relationships sink and fail.
Riddlehoover opens the film with a monologue that shows his self-absorption and we see right away that there is something not quite right with him; he has a tragic flaw (interestingly enough he also plays the understudy of Hamlet, the character with the greatest flaw of all). David knows what he wants -- but not what he needs.
Riddlehoover won the MySpace User's Choice Award in June 2006 for "To a Tee."

In Silver Road, lifelong friends Danny and Mark, both seventeen, struggle with the awkwardness of saying goodbye the night before Danny leaves for university in the city. Mark will stay behind to work his father's farm, hoping someday to buy some land of his own.

We see feelings of fear and isolation of Danny, a gay teenager who is leaving home but first needs to say goodbye to his best friend, and also quiet love of Mark, the shy farm boy who is struggling with being left alone.

"Though the film deals with "coming out", I knew I was never making a film for a gay audience only. I created a film that is at its core about the complexity of male love and friendship. Danny and Mark's love for one another is different in nature, but the bond they share is deep and meaningful. The depth of that bond is clear from the collective heartbreak in the final scene of the film.

Though the film's structure is simple, there is nothing easy about the characterization of Mark and Danny. It is Mark's deep desire to accept Danny and his recognition that he is no longer able to reach out to him that gives the film its final emotional punch.
